Why Your Partner Isn't Listening: Mia, Leo, and the Penguin Test

ENIGMA CORE × Nexus · Mia and Leo's Stories

01. The Very Attentive "Uh-huh"

Mia sat down next to Leo and started telling him about her day. He nodded, his eyes glued to his phone. "Uh-huh." Another sentence. Another nod. "Yeah, yeah, I'm listening." The words sounded right. So why did it feel like there was no one there to talk to?

02. Enter the Penguin

Mia narrowed her eyes: "And then a penguin in a business suit walked up to me and offered to sell me a refrigerator." Leo replied confidently: "Well, as long as the deal was good." She fell silent. He finally looked up: "What?"

03. Funny. But Not Really

"You just approved a business deal with a penguin," Mia said. Leo looked at the screen, then at her. He smiled. She almost smiled too, but changed her mind: "I'm not giving you a pop quiz. I actually wanted to talk to you."

04. It Wasn't About the Refrigerator

Leo put his phone down: "I'm sorry. I really missed half of that." The room went quiet. Mia sighed: "I don't need you to fix all my problems. Sometimes I just need you to hear what I'm saying." And that turned out to be much clearer than dropping hints.

05. Rebooting Without a Reset Button

"Shall we start over?" Leo suggested. Mia checked her watch: "Do you have five minutes?" He flipped his phone face down: "All yours." "Fair warning: there wasn't actually a penguin in the real story." "Too bad. I was already worried about his business venture."

06. Five Minutes Is a Lot

They talked. No grand declarations, dramatic music, or poetic lines. Leo asked about the things he didn't quite catch. Mia finally finished her story. Five minutes didn't fix the whole world, but they got rid of that weird feeling like an invisible glass wall was standing between two people.

07. And Then the Phone Rang Again

The screen flashed. Both of them instinctively turned their heads. Leo reached out his hand—and stopped. "It can wait," he said. Mia laughed: "Careful. You might accidentally start a good relationship that way." "Are you saying ours is bad?" "No. Just a little more attentive now."

08. Don't Turn Attention Into a Heroic Feat

You don't have to be available every single second. It's totally fine to be honest and say, "I'm beat, let's talk in ten minutes." But saying "I'm listening" when you're clearly not hurts way more than simply asking someone to hold on. Attention doesn't start with the perfect response; it starts with honesty.

09. A Test for Two

Try a little experiment today: five minutes of conversation, no screens. One person talks, the other doesn't interrupt and asks at least one genuine question. Then you switch. And if a penguin suddenly shows up in the story—well, now you know what to do. 🐧
