Mia and Leo: Unannounced Guests

The Stories of Mia and Leo

01. Two Plates

Mia set out two plates, lit two candles, and turned on the small lamp by the window. The evening was shaping up to be quiet. Leo was on the phone, laughing, and then suddenly said, "Sure, drop by! We're home." Mia slowly put her fork down. It looked like the plans had just changed. Without her input.

02. "They're Only Here for an Hour"

"Who's dropping by?" she asked. "Friends. They're in the neighborhood and decided to stop by." Leo said it casually, as if suggesting they open a window. "And you didn't think to ask me?" He paused. "I thought you wouldn't mind." "That's just it, Leo. You thought for both of us." There were ten minutes left before the doorbell rang.

03. The Awkward Threshold

The guests walked in carrying a bag of pastries and noisy greetings. Seeing the table set for two, one of them asked, "Are we interrupting?" Mia already had her mouth open, but Leo beat her to it: "I invited you without checking with Mia first. So the awkwardness is on me." Nobody pretended that everything was picture-perfect.

04. Host of the Evening

Leo fetched extra cups, ordered food, and handled the crowded table himself. Mia chatted with the guests, even laughed, but glanced at the clock from time to time. She wasn't going to make a scene in front of outsiders. Nor was she going to pretend her evening was worthless.

05. After the Door Closed

When the guests left, crumbs, empty cups, and silence remained in the apartment. Leo reached for the dishes. "Are you mad?" he asked. "Yes. Not at them. At the fact that you took charge of our evening alone." He wanted to object, but looked at the two untouched candles and thought better of it.

06. Don't Confuse Surprises

"I wanted it to be fun," Leo said. "Then you could have asked. A surprise is a pastry with tea. Having four people in the living room is a whole evening's plan." He grinned: "So, should I leave the pastries?" "Leave them. And wash the cups." They both laughed, but the conversation didn't end there.

07. Two People, One Home

They agreed on a simple thing: inviting friends over is fine, but it needs to be discussed first. Not for permission, and not out of fear of a fight. Just because a shared home shouldn't become the private territory of just one person, even with the best of intentions. Leo wiped the table and said quietly, "I get why you were upset."

08. The Next Message

A few days later, Leo's phone flashed again: "We'll be in the area. Can we drop by?" He looked up at Mia: "How does our evening look?" She checked the clock, then looked at him: "Tonight works. Just let's skip the impromptu banquet." Leo replied to his friends and put his phone away. Two plates on the table no longer meant that decisions were being made behind her back.
